Trench coats can be rightly termed veterans of World War I. Exclusively designed for British soldiers to be used in the rain affected trenches in Europe trench coats have survived a century after it came to use first. Not only that the original design of trench coats have remained the same till today and used by all sections of the society. Small modifications have been made to suit modern trends and also different types of users. The name has survived and a mention of the name revives the memory of the World War I for people who have learnt it in the history lesson.

The unpredictable nature of British weather with pouring rain coming down without warning was used by cartoonist to depict a typical Londoner with an umbrella always. There are belted and open versions and some are even coated with wax to facilitate water to run down.

Trench coats had to beat the competition from modern coat including blazers. They can easily match menswear like jeans, smart trousers, etc. Designs are made in such a manner that trench coats can look sophisticatedly modern and also as casual, depending upon the occasion at which it is worn. Trench coats cannot be brushed aside as raincoats. They have also had Hollywood charm as well as it has been worn by leading actors and actresses.

Trench coats are not used just by businessmen. They have found favor with politicians, sportspersons, artists etc. Because trench coats have entered the fashion field, fabrics are also chosen to suit various styles. Check patterns and grey wool are favorite materials. The designer has the onerous task of combining modern design with the original appealing features.
